Yachtmaster Exam Prep
This is an intensive training
session specifically designed to prepare candidates
for the Yachtmaster Exam.
There is no fixed syllabus and training is tailored
to suit the individual needs of the candidate.
This is not designed to turn you into an RYA Yachtmaster,
but to hone your skills which you have already gained
elsewhere.
The Instructor will provide senarios similar to those
the examiner will give during the Exam. This will
allow you to practice and build confidence.
The Instructor will give constant feedback on tasks
and concentrate more on any weak points that need
brushing up.
There is no time for any theory and as such candidates
should ensure they have a thorough knowledge and understanding
of any of the RYA Cruising Scheme Subjects. (pages
63-66 G15 Logbook)
Particular attention should be paid to making sure
that a thorough knowledge and understanding of the
IRPCS which will be tested by the examiner.
You will be asked to produce a passage plan.
This can be prepared prior to the exam and I recommend
you complete the passage planning exercise in the
YM Shorebased Course Exercise Booklet prior to starting
the prep week.
The Prep week will involve sailing in waters around
the area the Exam will take place.
During this time we will carry out exercises taking
in all the practical skills you will have to demonstrate
to the Examiner. You will be de-briefed on each part
of the Syllabus and any weak points will be improved.
The aim is to practice until your confidence and skill
levels are such that you can carry out any part of
the Syllabus in a relaxed, safe, and seaman like manner.
The Exam
The Exam will take around 6-8 hours per person and
you will each take turns in demonstrating your skills
in parts of the Syllabus. (As detailed in the Exam
Syllabus is in G15 pages 52-54)
On completion of the exam you will be fully de-briefed
by the examiner and informed of his recommendations
to the RYA.
The Exam report and fee will be sent to the RYA and
The Yachtmaster Panel will sit and decide whether
to award the Yachtmaster Certificate.
The Examiner is there to confirm you are at a level
to be awarded the Certificate. He is not there to
trick you or ask you to do anything you have not done
before or would be expected to be able to do as a
yacht Skipper.
All he wants to see is you demonstrating your ability
as Skipper. Although there will be an element of nerves
involved you should treat it like any other Skippering
task you have been given or had to do before.
The Examiner will not take an active part in the crewing
of the yacht and will just be an observer.
Try to go out and
enjoy the experience.
Good luck!!
