The Raja Muda Regatta Campaign

Langkawi Sailing School's sail training Vessels Aeolus and Kay Sira set off on the 06 Nov for the trip down to Port Klang to Join this year's International Raja Muda Regatta.

The Voyage South was split into 2 legs, Langkawi to Penang and Penang to Port Klang. During these legs sail training Courses were carried out and various RYA Certificates were successfully earned.

During Leg one Aeolus was skippered by Yachtmaster Instructor Keith Miller with School Principal, Barry Wickett on Kay Sira.

Leg two saw a change of crew and skipper with Cruising Instructor and Owner Simon Read returning to Aeolus and Keith taking over Kay Sira.

With a tight time schedule to get down to Port Klang in time for the Regatta it was all go with both crews planning the route down.

Aeolus had to contend with a broken Propeller blade which was dealt with swiftly and proffessionally by Skipper and owner Simon Read, who had to arrange an emergency slipping and source a new propellor, Then get it fitted and sail the boat to Port Klang in time for the start. Thanks go to the team from Penn Marine in Penang and also the crew of Aeolus who managed to sail the boat to Klang in record time.

Kay Sira was not without problems of her own with battery Issues and a sea water pump bearing that decided to seize. However with new batteries fitted and a new pump it was all systems go for the Regatta. The Crews moved on board and were issued with the smart orange racing team T shirts.

Below are press releases issued by .AsianYachting .com for the 6 races of the Regatta.

Pre Race Report

IRC Cruising Class 5 sees Japan's Yasuto Fuda Dehler 38 Fortissimo 8 returning for another go at the illusive trophy. Simon Read Aeolus XC, Rob Wiiliams Hanse 545e Odin Aquacraft Asia and Sonny Soh Hunter 33 PS are all newcomers to the event. The RSYC have entered their Jeanneau 32 Panacea skippered by coach Rizal Sazali and crewed by junior club members. Morten Ringvold Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 37 Haffiman is crewed by the Kedah youth team moving on from the dinghy level and eager to gain some keelboat experience. Ken Yap's Hunter 9.72 Millennium returns for the second year and all will be chasing Gavin Welman's Hallberg-Rassy Rascal that has won here before.

The grand old dames of the Non IRC Classic Class 6 includes Richard Curtis' 100 year old Eveline skippered by Trevor Richards and Jose de la Vega's International 12 Metre Chancegger. They will be joined by students from the Langkawi Sailing School on Barry Wickett's Kay Sira but will have to contend with the Royal Malaysian Navy's Contessa 32 Musytari skippered by Lt Haniff that have won the class for the last two years.

Race One

IRC Cruising Class 5 is the only class were yachts can motor but their declared engine hours are multiplied by 1.5 and added to the elapsed time. Japan's Yasuto Fuda Dehler 38 Fortissimo 8 make his intentions known by taking out the handicap honours. Gavin Welman's Hallberg-Rassy Rascal suffered in the light patches but still did enough to score second place. Rob Wiiliams brand new Hanse 545e Odin Aquacraft Asia took line honours by the country mile but ended up in third place after handicaps were applied. All three podium places are filled by yachts that did not motor.

Although Barry Wickett's Kay Sira finished over five hours in front of Datuk Richard Curtis' Eveline skippered by Trevor Richards, the grand 100 year old dame managed to leap frog them and claim Class 6 handicap honours. The Royal Malaysian Navy's Contessa 32 Musytari skippered by Lt Haniff had to settle on third place and Jose de la Vega's International 12 Metre Chancegger is a no show for the time being.

Race Two

In IRC Cruising Class 5 Japan's Yasuto Fuda Dehler 38 Fortissimo 8 climbed back on the top step of the podium and in doing so retake the overall lead. The RSYC youth team on their Jeanneau 32 Panacea skippered by Rizal Sazali came good with second place. Third place for Gavin Welman's Hallberg-Rassy Rascal knocks them down to second overall. A broken forestay on Morten Ringvold's Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 37 Haffiman sees them retiring from the regatta.

Datuk Richard Curtis' Eveline skippered by Trevor Richards is back on winning form today. Second place for Barry Wickett's Kay Sira crewed by students from the Langkawi Sailing School keeps them in the overall Class 6 lead for the time being. The Malaysian Armed Forces Contessa 32 Musytari skippered by Lt Haniff have consistently scored third places to be assured of the bronze medal.

Race Three

In IRC Cruising Class 5 Gavin Welman's Hallberg-Rassy Rascal reveled in the strong conditions to claim the daily double and stay in the running for the overall title. The Langkawi Sailing School crewing on Simon Read's Aeolus XC are ecstatic with second place. Third place for Japan's Yasuto Fuda Dehler 38 Fortissimo 8 brings them back to being tied for the overall lead with Rascal and all to play for.

Back on winning form Barry Wickett's Kay Sira crewed by students from the Langkawi Sailing School extends their lead in Class 6. A bumpy ride for the Malaysian Armed Forces Contessa 32 Musytari skippered by Lt Haniff for second place. Datuk Richard Curtis' Eveline skippered by Trevor Richards retired from the race with rigging damage.

Race 4,5,6 and Summary

Extraordinary circumstances yesterday led to Class 5 leader Gavin Welman's Hallberg-Rassy Rascal being half way up the first leg at the start and record a Did Not Start. Today Japan's Yasuto Fuda Dehler 38 Fortissimo 8 Did Not Compete due to a damaged forestay. Rascal and Fortissimo have been fighting over the lead all regatta. First place for Rascal today gives them a one point advantage over Fortissimo and sail away with the title. Vast improvements by Simon Read's Aeolus XC with crew from the Langkawi Sailing School have elevated them to third overall.

Consistently scoring first and second places Barry Wickett's Kay Sira crewed by students from the Langkawi Sailing School have triumphed in Class 6 and take home the Eveline Trophy. A late charge today by Datuk Richard Curtis' Eveline skippered by Trevor Richards was not enough to take back the lead. The Malaysian Armed Forces Contessa 32 Musytari skippered by Lt Haniff could not fire up enough steam to defend the title and ended up in third place.

An Outstanding result by all involved. Congratulations to all our students who took part.
